HOW WE BEGAN...
Spanish Grove Academy was founded in 2010 by Carla Hernandez. Ms. Hernandez, or Ms. Carlita as she was known by her students, brought her extensive background in education from Mexico City, and a hope that children in South Texas would benefit both from her academic experience and cultural innovations. During the early years at SGA, you would even find her children, Natalia and Alvaro, and daughter-in-law, Lauren, working at the school. From the very beginning Ms. Hernandez built the foundation of the school through her example of tireless servant leadership. Sleeping on the floors during construction, cleaning bathrooms, and addressing each child’s unique needs were just a few of the ways she helped create a culture of caring at SGA. Widely regarded as the first Spanish immersion school in San Antonio, the SGA family grew rapidly.
In 2015, Ms Carla retired and the school was purchased by two parents, Tomas and Christina Martinez. Their family goal was to preserve what had been created in Spanish Grove Academy while helping take the school to the next step. Over the next two years, Tomas and Christina would build a great team of amazing teachers, leadership and staff and ultimately become the founders of Spanish Grove Academy, a San Antonio, Texas private school.
Today, Tomas serves the school as the Educational Advancement coach teaching and training the Faculty and Staff. Christina sits on the Board of Trustees and you will find her nearly every day at the school either in a classroom with the children, meeting with parents or touring and guiding perspective families through the admissions process.
It all began with one seed which over time would blossom beautifully. The name Spanish Grove Academy brings to mind tall trees, all growing together with one purpose: educating the mind, nurturing the heart. It’s why we’re here, and we hope you’ll find it’s a pretty wonderful place to be.
